Vodkasatan: Roadburn Festival 2012: The Artwork of Costin Chioreanu We have invited Romanian visual artist Costin Chioreanu to be the official artist for Roadburn 2012. Chioreanu will set the visual tone for the festival together with Voivod’s Michel Langevin and a new, as of yet unnamed, Dutch artist. NY-based music scribe and fellow countryman Stefan Raduta from Transylvanian Hungerrr is here to give us an introduction: Stefan Raduta: “I am thrilled beyond belief by Roadburn’s decision to have Costin add his visual input to the festival’s already unparalleled diversity. As someone who has been following Chioreanu’s progress closely, I can say without a shadow of a doubt that he is easily one the most incredibly talented young artists to emerge in the dark metal scene in the last few years. He has produced work for the likes of Darkthrone, Mayhem, Ulver, Aura Noir, Grave, Absu and Hexvessel, among others. He has a gift that truly deserves attention; his work is distinctive as well as authentic and genuine. More than that, he masters every medium he explores, from drawing to directing music videos. Driven by an unbridled passion, he is capable of not only conjuring images to feed demons and nightmares but also great finesse, sensibility and depth. Hailing from a former communist country, Costin has always followed his own voice. The path that he has chosen has been grueling, and one filled with frustration and sacrifices. He has learned to embrace the type of adversity and prejudice to which many geographically privileged peers are strangers. To put it mildly, being a struggling artist in a country where everything works against you is not easy. For starters, at the very foundation is a society that appears to be completely backward. You have two choices: either get the hell out and not look back, or stay and fight the persistent ignorance, mediocrity and intolerance. Ever the dreamer and always thinking creatively and critically, Costin’s success has been hard-won and well-deserved. Below is the link to a recent in-depth interview with Costin. It’s a special story I want to share with the faithful Roadburn readers and festivalgoers. It starts with a presentation of his latest achievements, including the stunning 13-part Where Purgatory Ends interactive exhibition that features a soundtrack recorded in collaboration with Rune Eriksen (Ava Inferi, Aura Noir, ex-Mayhem). I am also pleased to offer the Roadburn audience an exclusive preview of his work on Grishjärta. This is the debut book of poems by Nattramn of Silencer. The enigmatic and controversial artist has not been dormant despite having kept a low profile for over a decade. A new era of apocalyptic doom approaches! Featuring the dark and chilling vocals of Sharie Neyland along with Alex Kearney (guitar), Myke Heath (Drums), Jim Willumsen (Bass) and founder member Steve Mills (Guitar). Despite, or because of the hardships the Kings have endured over the last 12 months their determination and unique vision for heavy music remains as strong as ever. This new phase in the Kings‘ development undulates with vintage amplification, the riffs seething with menace and danger – things fans have come to love and expect! It is a journey to ghostly worlds – suffocating and claustrophobic – where ancient terrors slowly seep into the blood stream. Vodkasatan: Costin Chioreanu To Debut Too Late for Rainbows at Roadburn 2012 | Roadburn This year’s Roadburn Festival will include the world premiere of Romanian artist Costin Chioreanu‘s new exhibition Too Late for Rainbows. Following the success of his 2011 exhibition Where Purgatory Ends, a combination art show / musical performance / happening staged at various events in Alba Iulia (Transylvania), Helsinki, New York and Bucharest, it is Tilburg’s turn to host the artist. Unlike Where Purgatory Ends, which featured metaphorical reflections on daily life and transcendent childhood memories, Too Late for Rainbows deals with spiritual crimes that man has been plotting for thousands of years and is about to commit. While the artist is aware of the imminence of this process and its consequences, he also understands that the unseen world, almost gone from the conscience of man, will swiftly return. The visual discourse is a graphical and metaphorical observation of the final moments of this spiritual apocalypse, for the unseen world and the bond it shares are the most important endangered species in man’s world. Cause (Riddle) “I have been and always am with you, anywhere, even where your shadow doesn’t follow you, until you find me. I am hidden by you in many, in so many that you even forgot the way to really look for me.” Effect It the beginning there was the word. And men described with words what was around them, creating pictures. Pictures of the definable translated the indefinable. So words turned empty and the empty end of rainbows filled the sky. And now… now there is just noise. In a world of carnal noise Our time has come again, Silent. As many of you can hear our silence, As many of you will step forward.
Vodkasatan: Costin Chioreanu’s Band-Related Posters For Roadburn 2012 Pt.1: Tombs, Oranssi Pazuzu and Virus Costin Chioreanu, Roadburn‘s official visual artist alongside Voivod‘s Michel “Away” Langevin and a yet to be named Dutch talent, is currently working on a series of band posters for the 2012 festival. Both Costin and Roadburn are pleased to present his first three posters: Tombs, Oranssi Pazuzu and Virus. Costin Chioreanu comments: “When I’m working on a band-related project, I listen to the band’s music and get into the atmosphere. In the case of Tombs, I was inspired to illustrate the decline of the American Dream. I named the piece ‘Dying Mother of Exiles.’ The decomposing main character resembles Saint Mary more closely than the Statue of Liberty, but I always like to incorporate more ideas into my art that support a main theme. “I think the result successfully illustrates the tension, the decadence and the inner despair, without having [an overt political agenda], which I consider the most horrible thing to be included in art of any kind. [The poster art] portrays what I feel about America based on two important things: my personal experience and the signals that several bands there are sending at a spiritual level. I really think there is a frequency where the common consciousness is working… “I really like the weird feeling that Oranssi Pazuzu‘s music gives me. My brain normally measures and expresses things using imagery, so maybe that’s why when I listen to their music it sends me on an interesting trip that lets me explore surreal places and landscapes in the universe. It’s like a good adventure movie with a powerful science fiction touch. When I was a kid I was obsessed with sci-fi (and still am). I decided to use ‘Andromeda’ for the artwork: the name of the song also refers to the stories I devoured when I was younger. To me, the result is like a postcard from where my mind travels listening to this music. “For Virus, the result might be a jolt to some eyes, but I was just being honest: whenever I listen to Virus I imagine an old Russian movie. I get flashbacks from Tarkovsky movies or Russian sci-fi stuff. This band has a unique approach; their dissonant, surreal riffs convey the kind of anxiety unique to Russian films. ‘Endangered Technology’ is a mixture of ideas: it is both connected to latest Virus album graphic concept and pushes the core further into a new dimension of surrealism and sci-fi. The name of the artwork can also be taken as a reference to Voivod, a fantastic band with whom Virus has something very important in common, namely dissonance-based originality and creativity. The title itself is a metaphor for the extreme state of dehumanization that contemporary consumer society has reached.” Costin Chioreanu‘s poster series will be for sale at Roadburn 2012. имо, лучший роадбёрновский арт со времён маллеус

Vodkasatan: Electric Moon Exploring the outer reaches of hallucinogen-induced space rock, Germany’s Electric Moon will bring their intergalactic jams to Voivod‘s curated Au-delà du Réel event at the 2012 Roadburn fest on Friday, April 13th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. Led by Sula Bassana‘s fuzzed-out, heavy guitar explorations, Electric Moon weave pure-psychedelia, dub, doom, krautrock and drone into kosmische improvisations via riffing and a myrad of guitar effects and sounds. The overall vibe of their epic but hypnotic freak-outs can be utterly mesmerizing or stunningly dark, all the while remaining deeply psychedelic.
Vodkasatan: J.G. Thirlwell‘s Manorexia Roadburn and Voivod are truly thrilled and honored that J.G. Thirlwell‘s Manorexia will be playing at Au-delà du Réel / Roadburn 2012 on Friday, April 13th. Known primarily through his Foetus releases, Thirlwell has used the Manorexia moniker for his most cinematic, orchestral (and arguably most complex) music. Manorexia released Volvox Turbo in 2001 and The Radiolarian Ooze in 2002, and after a lengthy break came out with The Mesopelagic Waters (a 2010 release of tracks from the first two records rearranged and performed by a chamber ensemble) and the 2011 double CD, Dinoflagellate Blooms. Manorexia also provided the score for the amazing Ken Jacobs film Seeking The Monkey King from 2011. Thirlwell‘s Manorexia has the sound of skeletal modern classical chamber music tinged with musique concrete, but it moves fluidly from motif to motif and radically changes styles in a way that is much closer to free jazz or avant-garde composition than classical music. The moods are often dark and foreboding or staccato and tense, teeming with skittering keyboards, slithering strings and punctuating bells that share the stage with warm cello drones and deep horn swells. Throughout, there are strange and worrisome ambiences, wheezing and growling from the background to the foreground, always pulling your attention towards the periphery. The end result is some of the most visceral and dramatic music you will ever hear, regardless of instrumentation or genre.

Vodkasatan: Electric Orange на афтере Electric Orange has been confirmed for Roadburn‘s Afterburner event on Sunday, April 15th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. The neo-krautrockers, who put in an extraordinary performance at the 2008 edition of Roadburn, return to celebrate their 20th anniversary with a special set. Over the years, Electric Orange have been channeling the essence of krautrock on great albums including Abgelaufen!, Platte, Morbus and Netto while simultaneously expanding on the genre and improving their craft. The band can lay down tribal drums, kaleidoscopic synthesizer effects and six-string freak-outs with the best of them, and send you into the outermost psychedelic realms of the musical galaxy. This is an amazing live group that loves to stretch out the jams, just like in the good old days of Germany’s experimental scene of the late 60s and 70s. Electric Orange honors the legacy of Can, Amon Duul II, Neu!, Harmonia and Birth Control while managing to deliver a sound that is fresh and inspiring. With the addition of Electric Orange‘s 20th anniversary show, the lineup for the 2012 Roadburn Afterburner is complete. The Roadburn 2012 Afterburner features thrash legends Coroner (headlining), Yob, Bongripper, Black Cobra, Internal Void, The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation, Bong, Urfaust, Dragged Into Sunlight, Fleshpress , Atlantis and Electric Orange. Vodkasatan: Roadburn Festival Introduces: TANK86 (параллельно с основным фестом, в Cul de Sac) We are very excited to announce the third installment of Roadburn Festival Introduces. The idea is to show promising Dutch bands that combine their own vibe with a distinctive Roadburn flair, whether that means a psychedelic slant, having roots in the heavy 70s or an unstoppable need to churn out instru-metal. This year, we will offer TANK86 the opportunity to connect with the international Roadburn community during an intimate show at the Cul de Sac on Saturday April 14th in Tilburg, Holland. Doors open 1pm and the show starts at 2pm. TANK86 have been honing their instrumental take on stoner, epic doom, sludge, old-school headbanging heavy metal and even progressive metal since 2004. Their hard work has come to fruition on their highly acclaimed full-length album Rise, and we feel the band has something unique and interesting to offer Roadburners. Initially, TANK86 may have prompted comparisons to Karma To Burn’s brand of bone-charring riffs and heavy, groove-based approach, but over the years the band’s instru-metal has matured in the rehearsal space and live on stage (including a European tour with Dozer) into something special and genre-defying. Live, TANK86 are just as dynamic and atmospheric as they are on record, building up some captivating grooves by way of neck-snapping, killer riffing, and a whirlwind of instrumental wizardry (pairing odd time signatures with plenty of tempo changes), hair-raising hooks, spooky passages and relentless power that draws the audience in. It’s always an exciting show. The Netherlands has been long overdue for a band to put the lowlands back on the international instru-metal map. We’re thrilled to see TANK86 rise to the occasion!

Vodkasatan: Alkerdeel We at Roadburn usually don’t like surprises as far as our production affairs go, but due to some small changes, we’re able to add another band to the lineup for Saturday, April 14th. That’s the kind of surprise we do like! Thus, we’re really pleased to announce that Belgium’s Alkerdeel has been confirmed for Roadburn 2012. Alkerdeel is currently making waves in the underground with their sophomore album, Morinde, which will be officially released on February 24th via Consouling Sounds and At War With False Noise. Alkerdeel has pushed up the ante with the release of Morinde as not only the songs have matured and gained more depth, the lo-fi approach of the previous recordings has made way for a sound that can reveal all its sludgy, blackened, sluggish nuances. Musically, Alkerdeel infuse raw sludge and doom with filthy blackmetal, and if you’re a fan of Burning Witch, Darkthrone or Beherit, then you”ll definitely like Alkerdeel, too. Vodkasatan: Roadburn 2012: Het Patronaat replaces Midi Theatre The Midi Theatre was closed by the Tilburg city council on 1 January 2012 for financial and political reasons. Unfortunately, there is no way to reopen it even temporarily for this year’s Roadburn Festival. The addition of the Midi Theatre to our festival during the past two editions was a huge success. Sadly, there was absolutely nothing we could do to prevent it from closing. Fortunately, we have found a fourth stage that is slightly larger than 013′s Green Room in a nearby venue: Het Patronaat. If you have been to Roadburn before, you very well might have taken a break on the steps. Or perhaps you walked right past without noticing it. That certainly won’t be the case this year! Located only about 30 meters from the entrance to the 013 venue, the beautiful former church annex can hold up to 900 people at any given time. The main floor can accommodate about 300 people. It features a large bar where you can relax and refuel with good food and drinks. We are planning some afternoon acoustic shows here, too: stay tuned for more details. The second floor is where the bands will be playing. It holds about 600 people and will be set up for maximum sound quality and visibility. The bands scheduled to play Het Patronaat undoubtedly will be in demand, so if you show up and the second floor is at full capacity, you will have to wait until someone leaves. If your very existence depends on seeing a specific band, the best advice is to show up early to avoid the potentional stress of having to stand in line. Yes, we know: that might mean missing part of a set you are really enjoying in 013 -in Dutch we call this a luxe-probleem or “luxury problem.” The merchansie for all the bands playing Het Patronaat will be available on the main floor.
