Vodkasatan: Michael Gira While Swans intensely heavy headliner performance at this year’s Roadburn is still resonating in our collective minds, we’re elated to announce the return of Michael Gira for an acoustic solo performance on Thursday, April 14th at the Midi Theatre in Tilburg, Holland. Michael Gira will undoubtedly own the Midi theatre by force of his personality and his songs, delivered through a stream-of-consciousness at times and violent power at other times, breaking boundaries between music and art like Warhol or Cocteau. At the heart of all of Michael‘s performances (whether acoustic or with Swans), at their bare essence, are his voice and his thoughts. This solo performance allows the audience to get inside the songs, to discover something that we didn’t notice before.

Vodkasatan: Killing Joke Voivod and Roadburn are equally thrilled to announce that seminal post-punk pioneers Killing Joke will perform at Roadburn 2012 on Thursday, April 12th as part of the newly expanded Au-delà du Réel event. Killing Joke was at the top of Voivod’s wish list as soon as they accepted the curator invitation. Unfortunately, Jaz Coleman (vocals, keyboards and arrangements), Geordie Walker (guitar), Youth (bass) and Paul Ferguson (drums) could not make it to Tilburg on Friday, April 13th due to prior commitments. However, in the spirit of Roadburn and true to the Outer Limits theme, it was quickly decided to expand Au-delà du Réel and turn Voivod‘s dream of sharing a stage with Killing Joke into reality. Once described by Paul Ferguson as “the sound of the earth vomiting,” Killing Joke is anthemic and grandiose in its evocation of nightmare visions. Notorious for their use of inflammatory imagery, a backlash against a world they perceived as ever more materialistic, unjust and conservative, Killing Joke railed against the establishment and created a unique sound from the very start. Killing Joke was incorporating danceable elements with heavy, aggressive, grinding guitars and pounding tribal drums all the way back in the Eighties. With elements of proto-techno rock, their post-apocalyptic vision inspired bands as diverse and influential as Godflesh, Ministry and Tool. Their legacy can be heard and felt across the entire Roadburn festival spectrum. Namechecked and covered by dozens of great bands, Killing Joke‘s significance in rock history was acknowledged again in 2005 when they won Kerrang magazine’s prestigious lifetime achievement award. 2010 and 2011 have been two of the most successful years for the band. Absolute Dissent won Album of the Year at the 2010 Metal Hammer Golden Gods Awards and long-time fan Jimmy Page presented the band the Lifetime Achievement recognition at the Classic Rock Awards. Bassist Youth revealed the band’s secret to success in a 2011 interview: “A stubborn refusal to go away, fearless about reinventing ourselves and our sound, being authentic to who we are as individuals and a shared common quest in the fearless pursuit of the timeless and eternal qualities in music and life.” Killing Joke have always been and continue to be more than just a band, which we will witness in living, fire-breathing color during Voivod’s Au-delà du Réel on Thursday, April 12 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. Their appearance will coincide with an extensive tour in support of a new album and the set lists on these dates will form the most comprehensive career spanning shows to date! Please note that Voivod‘s second show originally scheduled for Saturday, April 14th has been moved to Thursday, April 12th as part of the specially extended Au-delà du Réel. The main stage line-up for Thursday, April 12th (in alphabetical, not official running order): Agalloch, d.USK/diSEMBOWELMENT, Killing Joke, OM, Ulver and Voivod.

Vodkasatan: Atlantis íà àôòåðå With two critically acclaimed albums, Carpe Omnium and Mistress Of Ghosts, and their intense live shows, Atlantis has quickly become a respected name in the post-metal / rock scene. While all music is written by Gilson Heitinga, Atlantis live is a full blown band. By creating a deafening wall of sound with their mixture of noise, doom, ambient, industrial and metal, Atlantis tears down the walls between these genres, leaving their audiences in a state of awe. Atlantis will play on Sunday, April 14th.

Vodkasatan: Priestess Montreal’s electrifying riff-rock crew Priestess show an authentic approach to Seventies-inspired guitar thunder. They have plenty of swagger and the skills to back it up. Take a flair for soaring hooks and impressive riffage, add harmony vocals and some damn catchy songs and get ready to rock. Don’t fear the cowbell! Priestess is part of Voivod‘s special Au-delà du Réel event but will play the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland on Thursday, April 12th instead of Friday, April 13th to accommodate their spring 2012 tour schedule with Red Fang.

Vodkasatan: Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell Playing with passion and a raucous ‘fuck you’ attitude, UK’s power-trio Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell are channelling early 70′s proto-metal played by the likes of Buffalo, Dust and Sir Lord Baltimore. Augmented by Flying V’s, fire-breathing riffery, scorching solos and outrageous facial hair, ASCS showcase how heavily fuzzed out rock can still be brutally honest without sounding like classic rock revivalists. We’re taking about pure, unadulterated fun here, it’s not about what year, or if their heavy rock attitude is trendy or not, ASCS is all about playing from the heart and soul, being exciting and offering escapist entertainment firmly rooted in the here and now. ASCS’s debut 7″, Return to Zero, released on Rise Above Records ( who else?) is already a highly sought after collectors item. Expect a full-length early next year. Bang your head, raise your fist, and catch them while can on Saturday, April 14th at 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Vodkasatan: Danava Danava will be bringing their heavy 70′s inspired, butt-shaking, prog rock to Voivod‘s curated Au-delà du Réel event at the 2012 Roadburn fest on Friday, April 13th. Portland Oregon’s musical alchemists Danava have a talent for mixing things that would make a Cuisinart green with envy. They combine relentlessly catchy drum-driven hard rock, video game inspired songwriting, and superb musical chops together with a singer that sounds like a higher-pitched Bobby Liebling to create a uniquely delectable musical feast.

Vodkasatan: Conan Conan approach from the North West of England on a devastating, droning, charging warbeast of heaviness, to lay waste to Roadburn 2012 in a barrage of galloping crust and aching tone. Their performance at Roadburn will be their first ever show outside of the UK and Ireland. Worshipping at the Altar Of The Riff, they summon the Gods of fuzz, distortion and blazing valves to join them in their sonic ritual. In response to the special invitation extended to them from Voivod, Conan will be destroying the innards of all those who enter Stage01 (formerly known as Bat Cave) on Friday 13th April.

RedGates: Êîíàí!

Vodkasatan: Internal Void íà àôòåðå We’re thrilled to announce that Legendary US-doomsters Internal Void will be making a rare European appareance at Roadburn Festival Afterburner on Sunday, April 15th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. Internal Void formed in the summer of 1987. After quickly solidifying themselves as front runners in the burgeoning Maryland Doom scene IV released their Voyage demo in 1991. Germany’s Hellhound Records soon signed IV and their first full length offering Standing on the Sun was released in 1993. On the heels of the release of Standing Internal Void embarked on a tour of the southeast United States with Hellhound label mates and doom pioneers Saint Vitus. Following a contract dispute Internal Void decided to part ways with Hellhound Records. With the departure of original drummer Eric Little, Internal Void settled in with well known Maryland Doom scene and long time friend, former Aylum/Unorthodox drummer Ronnie Kalimon. After signing with Southern Lord Recordings in 1999 IV released the acclaimed Unearthed on the doom loving masses. As IV continued to gig locally in the mid-Atlantic USA region they soon signed with Dogstreet Records to release their next full length release, Matricide. Following Kelly Carmichael and Adam Heinzmann’s involvement with Pentagram and a few years of down time due to numerous family and personal health issues along with pursuing other musical avenues Internal Void are back with a vengeance! “We are thrilled to be a part of Roadburn, says the band, “Internal Void can finally acheive our goal of playing overseas, after numerous attempts that sadly fell through this is the best way we can imagine making it happen.” ”Internal Void will be bringing it to Roadburn in 2012!!”

Vodkasatan: Saturnalia Temple Year of The Goat We’re are excited to announce that occult rockers Saturnalia Temple and Year of the Goat have been added to the lineup for Roadburn Festival 2012. Sweden’s occult blackened doom metallers Saturnalia Temple are gaining a well-deserved buzz from the metal underground by laying down lysergically thick distorted riffs, super hypnotic pulsating grooves, heavily processed vocals, and druggy effects. This is tripped out, downtuned heaviness at its most carnal, the band slipping from swirling occultic atmospheres to super psychedelic and seriously fucked-up tranced out stoner doom rituals. Saturnalia Temple‘s latest album, Aion of Drakon, is far out, mesmerizing and just might be your new favorite slo mo metal album. Come my fanatics, join the coven, and freak out over Saturnalia Temple on Thursday, April 12 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. Just like Saturnalia Temple, Sweden’s Year of the Goat are creating quite a buzz in the rock underground with the release of their much acclaimed debut EP, Lucem Ferre (Latin for The bringer of light / The son of desert fire). Year the Goat are inspired by the occult rock bands of the late sixties and early seventies, however, the inspiration is not so much musical as it is about the subject matter of the lyrics and the picture they paint of pagan rituals, Satanism and the dark arts. Year of the Goat don’t really recreate the musical stylings of that era. Instead, the band adds a modern feel to their 70′s flavored occult rock, with an almost prog rock or even indie rock approach to it. Year of the Goat don’t shy away from using catchy hooks, both vocally and guitar-wise, giving rise to amazing passages like “walk through the mist, to an ancient place, gathering for the King, to invoke his name, potion from the darkest well, opens for pagan souls, hear the angels of heaven wailing, as they call for the lord of darkness…” (taken from Of Darkness). Year of The Goat are currently working on their debut full-length, which will be released on Van Records next year. Both Year of The Goat and Saturnalia Temple will play on Thursday, April 12th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland.

Vodkasatan: ÀÕÓÅÍÍÎ ÝÒÎ!

Vodkasatan: Ancient VVisdom We’re thrilled to announce that Ancient VVisdom has been add to the lineup for Roadburn Festival 2012 on Thursday, April 12th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. Founded in Austin, TX in late 2009, Ancient VVisdom (pronounced “wisdom”) includes alumni of hardcore head splitters Integrity and Iron Age. Their style of honest, accoustic driven, pagan camp-fire doom (not unlike early death rock or neo-folklore) is complimented by lyrics ranging from mysteries of the occult, paganism, satanic philosophy, and forbidden knowledge. By stripping down their music, Ancient VVisdom, led by Nathan Opposition, achieve an unholy ambiance similar to the late occult mentality of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s spearheaded by Anton LaVey, and depicted in the disturbing movies of Kenneth Anger. Ancient VVisdom‘s debut full-length, A Godlike Inferno, garnished praise from critics and cultists alike, and if you’re seeking the man down south, but are sick of black metal’s inferno machinations, the band’s ritualistic, blackend hymns will leave you in high praise of Lord Lucifer. All hail to thee!

Vodkasatan: òåì âðåìåíåì, äî ïðàäàæè áèëåòîâ - ìåíüøå íåäåëè!

The rest of the line-up is bursting with fantastic bands. Vodkasatan: Valient Thorr Thorriors of the world rejoice, Valient Himself and his minions from Burlatia have been confirmed for Voivod‘s Au-delà du Réel event at Roadburn 2012 on Friday, April 13th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. Valient Thorr fires on all cylinders and offer go-for-broke, piston-pushing, classic (hard) rock that’s willing to get political on its own blue-collar yet interstellar terms. Earning a cult following over the years from their hyper-agitated live shows and memorable antics on stage, Valient Thorr will rain down upon Roadburn a memorable intergalactic shitstorm!

Vodkasatan: Farflung L.A. based sonic cosmonauts Farflung will be be making a triumphant and highly anticipated return to Roadburn for Voivod‘s curated Au-delà du Réel-event at the 2012 Festival on Friday, April 13th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. Taking inspiration from Hawkwind and kraut rock, Farflung utilize carefully constructed layers of celestial collage and brute riff force to create vital and modern space rock. Long time veterans of altering peoples brain chemistry with their heavy psychedelic punk-tinged sounds (over two decades and counting!), Farflung gets a change to reprise their their burning 2009 Roadburn performance, promising more fried minds as a result of their cosmic freakouts.

Vodkasatan: Heavy Jam We’re elated to announce a very special one-off show at Roadburn 2012: A Heavy Jam by J Mascis (guitar – Witch / Dinosaur Jr), Mario Rubalcaba (drums – Earthless), Mike Eginton (bass – Earthless) and Graham Clise (guitar – Witch / Lecherous Gaze) on Saturday, April 14th. This will be one epic jam session for fans of shredding psychedelia. Expect hard rock blues, underpinned by the muscular rhythmic sensibilities of kraut-rock, and then have the lid blasted off with the unbridled energy of 70′s psychedelic guitar rock. The rock solid foundation laid by drummer Mario Rubalcaba is a jumping off point for guitarists J Mascis, Graham Clise, and bassist Mike Eighton to explore the outer cosmos for consciousness expanding riffs and music-induced psychedelic experiences. Flame retardant clothing is highly recommended!

Vodkasatan: Nachtmystium We’re extremely pleased to report that Nachtmystium will be playing a very special show at Roadburn 2012‘s Voivod-curated Au-delà du Réel event on Friday, April 13th. For the first and only time, Nachtmystium will play their landmark USBM album Instinct: Decay in its entirety. When Instinct: Decay was released in 2006, branded as a psychedelic extreme metal record, it was met with deeply divided feedback –some highly laudatory and some derisive. 5 years later, the record sounds as good as ever and it seems clear that the derision was merely the backlash of closed-minded black metal fans. Change turned out to be a good thing — now Instinct: Decay is hailed as an enormous milestone in USBM history. In fact, along with Leviathan, Krieg, and Wolves In The Throne Room, Nachtmystium are considered instrumental in forging a unique musical identity for the USBM scene. This is a unique chance to hear the entire album at this one of a kind show, something definitely not to be missed! “Nachtmystium is extremely honored to be a part of Roadburn again”, says Blake Judd, “The fact that we were picked by one our idols and perhaps the most forward thinking metal bands of all time, Voivod, makes it even more that extraordinary. We decided to do something hopefully just as equally special for everyone there. We’ll be playing our album, Instinct: Decay, from start to finish. We hope you enjoy it.”

Vodkasatan: Witch Much to the mutual pleasure of Voivod and ourselves, Witch will be playing a one-off show at the Voivod-curated Au-delà du Réel event at Roadburn 2012 on Friday, April 13th, 013 venue, Tilburg, Holland. Founded in 2006, Witch churn out an punk-inspired style of psychedelic stoner doom that features Dave Sweetapple (Sweet Apple), Graham Clise (Annihilation Time / Lecherous Gaze), Kyle Thomas (Feathers), and marks the return of J Mascis to drums (his first instrument, back in the Deep Wound days). Witch have released two albums, Witch (2006) and Paralyzed (2008) that showcase their energetic music which is perfect for a live setting — equal measures of Sabath/Zeppelin inspired heavy 70′s rock and Dead Meadow meets The Wipers indie rock.

Vodkasatan: Bong íà àôòåðå Bong, England’s mystical masters of raga-inspired drone metal, will be returning to the Roadburn Festival in 2012 on Sunday, April 15th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holand. Despite their stoner-simple moniker, Bong bring surprising depth and weight to their musical excursions, probing far beneath the superficial aspects of Black Sabbath-worship into the molten core of the essence of metal. Bong‘s deep-delving yields a motherlode of subtle psychedelic riches amidst veins of pure drone which they excavate and manipulate into alloys of startling beauty and massive durability. We are very excited to have them back to Roadburn, unearthing more musical riches to strike us with awe.
