Vodkasatan: Sabbath Assembly We’re excited to report that Sabbath Assembly will be part of the 2011 Roadburn Festival lineup, set for Friday, April 15th at the Midi Theatre, Tilburg, Holland. Sabbath Assembly is a modern response to the musical activities of a cult known as The Process Church of the Final Judgment. In the late 60′s and into the 70′s, The Process opened chapters in London, Europe and across the United States. Processians dressed in black cloaks, walked the streets with German Shepherds and sang of the gnostic reconciliation of Christ and Satan. Sabbath Assembly has re-charged the cult’s original hymns for the current generation.

Mamiffer, formed in the desert of California and realized in the forests of Seattle, is based around piano compositions of Faith Coloccia, formerly of Everlovely Lightningheart. Mamiffer’s debut album is titled Hirror Enniffer. Mamiffer is a move away from a close collaborative process to one of solitary composition and exploration. A move to Seattle completed this process with a rotating cast of collaborators such as Aaron Turner (ISIS), Brian Cook and Chris Common (both from These Arms Are Snakes) providing arrangement, production and instrumentation. The idea is to showcase promising up-and-coming Dutch bands firmly rooted in either psychedelica or the heavy seventies. This year, we will offer Gingerpig the opportunity to connect with the international Roadburn community during an intimate show at the Cul De Sac music café on Saturday April 16th. Doors open 12:30pm and showtime 1.30pm. We feel that Gingerpig, revolving around Gorefest guitarist Boudewijn Bonebakker, has something unique and interesting to offer Roadburners. We are also predicting that their forthcoming debut album, The Ways of the Gingerpig (due out on Suburban Records in Benelux on April 29th, rest of Europe May 9th), will rank among the favorite Roadburn-related albums of 2011. Gingerpig take the best elements of Seventies hard rock, early prog, funk and even soul, and blend them with a bluesy edge. The band can nimbly go from long, drawn out guitar and Hammond organ improvisations to delivering compact pop, sometimes even throwing in riffs that would not feel out of place on a Gorefest record. Bonebakker’s vocals are a pleasant surprise, too. The Netherlands has been long overdue for a band to put the country back on the international heavy seventies map. The orbs sitting on the path and the repeating moth pattern are a personal nod to Victor Moscoso, one of my favorite psychedelic poster designers. David comments: “Ludicra has not only been my favorite San Francisco metal band since 1998, they’ve been my personal friends and a mutual inspiration for many people in the Bay Area scene. I am very happy to represent a local band amongst the incredible Roadburn 2011 line-up, which practically spans the entire globe. The piece embodies the Medean spirit of the band, which is voiced by two incredibly strong female musicians. Her mask acts as a reference to Ludicra’s moniker, a name that evokes dark and tragic theater amongst a metallic storm of blackened noise.”

Vodkasatan: Sungrazer вместо Gomer Pyle We are very sorry to announce that Gomer Pyle has cancelled their Afterburner appearance. Drummer Sander Evers just left the band, and it will take a while for Gomer Pyle to break in a new drummer, thus the band decided that it´s wise to skip this year’s Roadburn. A decision we respect and support. We hope to have them back next year. Luckily, we found a great replacement in Holland’s very own Sungrazer. Fresh off their tour with labelmates Colour Haze, the band’s fuzz runs deep and won over audiences from Germany to Denmark and from Austria to Holland in the last couple of weeks. Sungrazer‘s warm, heady, definitively European psychedelia bears a considerable resemblance to Colour Haze, but the band leans towards traditional stonerrock too, given their use of heavy riffs, occasional catchy choruses and the overwhelming natural flow of their self-titled debut album, out on Stefan Koglek’s Elektrohasch label. Sungrazer will perform a 75 minute set a the Green Room on Sunday April 17th, and showcase a heavy jam ethic, as they’re definitely one of the most promising bands to appear on the stonerrock scene in a while.

Vodkasatan: We’re excited to announce that The Machine [http://www.myspace.com/themachineband] will be part of this years Afterburner event, set for Sunday, April 17 at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. Due to some changes in the production schedule for this years Afterburner, we had the opportunity to add one more band to the line-up. The Machine is a perfect fit, as the overall vibe of Afterburner leans towards classic psychedelic rock and stonerrock, just like the old school Roadburn Festivals! The Machine, hailing from Rotterdam, Holland, pair molten stoner rock riffs with a fair dose of retro psych for good measure. The band also excels at incorporating acid-blues jamming that lifts their whole performance into outer space. The band’s latest album, Drie (out on Elektrohasch) captures the band in great form, and together with Sungrazer, they are two of the most promising bands to emerge from the Dutch stonerrock scene in a while. With the addition of The Machine, the line-up for this years Afterburner event is complete. The line-up is as follows: Black Mountain, Dead Meadow, Coffins, Blood Farmers, Sourvein, Spindrift, Samsara Blues Experiment, Black Pyramid, Dragontears, Sungrazer and The Machine.

David comments: “I was lucky enough to catch the Sabbath Assembly’s Portland show last year. It was the day after Halloween, and they transformed a theater space into a ritual setting where they proceeded to awe the small crowd with incredible reworkings of Process Church songs and ritual call and response. I was already familiar with Timothy Wyllie’s book “Love Sex Fear Death”, an inside account of the Process Church, so the live recreation by such fantastic musicians (Jex Thoth, Dave Nuss, Imaad Wasif) and illustrious publisher (Feral House) was an incredible event to witness. Since then, the band has been taking their work to another level, and it seems to be taking on a life of its own. I chose to reference Wyllie’s story, which is very much about the collective lives of the young and beautiful members of the cult, their pet German Shepards, internal conflicts, and ever-changing garb and symbology.” DV

David comments: “I cannot think of another band of recent years that has inspired me as deeply as Wovenhand. David Eugene Edwards’ song writing, poetry, and approach to life and spirituality embody much of what I would hope for in my own artwork. The album “The Threshing Floor” evokes visions of a lush garden full of Eastern pattern and ghostly fauna, of human kind walking the crushingly beautiful, light filled, wandering path.” “Circle…. on one hand, they are so eclectic that the most off-the-wall drawing might work. On the other hand, they are so incredibly varied and odd that it’s a challenge to think up an image that captures their essence! I chose to start with a skull, since most of their existing designs are based around them. Then, by Jussi’s request, the piece then took a turn towards a nautical “Jules Verne” theme. I like to think of it is a sort of occult compass, which is somehow fitting for the festival’s 2011 “artist in residence”!

PhillO))): This year, the annual Roadburn Metal Disco returns under the motto “Faster! Heavier! Louder!” after the last band finishes in the Midi Theatre. Once again, the intrepid DJ Maarten & DJ Pat are looking forward to spinning lots of excellent music on Saturday night. Whether it’s classic metal, doom, heavy 70s rock, stoner or thrash, you’re bound to hear something you like. Stagediving from the booth will not be uncommon as the night wears on! On Friday night, Finland’s Psychotropic Caravan will host an afterparty. Renowned for their highly acclaimed underground festivals in Helsinki, this marks their debut appearance at Roadburn. Expect some raucous singalongs (Finnish style) to keep the party going. “Jesus mikä kuosi!” On Thursday night, Holland’s DJ Bomber plus DJ Pat will do the honors with the aptly titled “Hell Bent for Roadburn!” to make the Midi’s infernal sonic baptism complete. It was a warm welcome back to the arena and everyone in the Buzzov-en camp appreciated every minute of it. Now, on to the bad news. Unfortunately, Kirk is having some health issues that need to be resolved before he is able to tour again. Hence, it is with heavy hearts that we must announce the postponement of Buzzov-en's European tour in April and our appearance at Roadburn. We will have rescheduled dates booked and posted ASAP, and the fine folks at Roadburn have already been gracious enough to invite us to play next year's event. Once Kirk has completed his treatments over the next several weeks, all should be well and he is expected to make a quick recovery, so the Maryland Deathfest and Hellfest appearances are both still on. soon. David comments: “The four members of Shrinebuilder are like titans, too iconic to fuse into one, visually and aesthetically. All four respective bands have been mountains of inspiration for me at some point in life, which makes any potential image all the more difficult to conjure. The “shrine”, to me, is ultimately the self. My solution as an artist faced with the task to “illustrate” Shrinebuilder is to distill the piece down to components of one huge, cosmic, heraldic crest. “Black Mountain’s grounded earthy style of rock has always reminded me of soaring hawks and nature’s mysticism. The “psychedelic Inuit” has been an ongoing theme in poster art since the 1960s, and I took this opportunity to ink my version.”

Vodkasatan: We’re proud to unveil David V. D’Andrea‘s latest installment of his Roadburn series: the Wardruna poster. David comments: “It has been a pleasure to work closely with Kvitrafn on the Wardruna piece. He initially sent me a sketch, the basis being three women / nature spirits with specific Samstav Runes flowing from them. The symbol in the middle of the composition is Wardruna’s personal rune and the snake is an adaptation of a serpent spiral. It’s very inspiring to work with a band so deeply rooted in nature and tradition.” Wardruna, the dark ambient folk project led by former Gorgoroth drummer Kvitrafn, has been confirmed for a special one-off performance at Roadburn Festival 2011, set for Thursday, April 14 at the Midi Theatre in Tilburg, Holland. Kvitrafn and fellow musicians Gaahl and Lindy Fay Hella explore the history of Norwegian mythology and paganism using traditional instruments such as goat and cow horns and bowed lyres. More unorthodox “instruments” such as trees, stones and fire are also incorporated into Wadruna‘s unique sound, which is further augmented by powerful vocal performances from several vocalists. Nearly six years in the making, Wardruna received rave reviews for their mesmerizing 2009 debut Gap Var Ginnunga, the first in the planned Runaljod trilogy that interprets the runes of the elder futhark. Gap Var Ginnunga will be released on vinyl on Burningworld Records prior to Wadruna‘s Roadburn performance. Kvitrafn comments: “I am very pleased and honoured that we are invited to contribute to Roadburn 2011. The festival with its very credible artistic focus and approach is something that I feel is very right for Wardruna to be a part of.” Although Wardruna has garnered a respectable and surprisingly diverse following, the group rarely performs live. Needless to say we are extremely excited that the band has been added to our line-up. Wardruna will definitely add a new dimension to the kaleidoscope of styles and sounds associated with Roadburn.

Vodkasatan: An Unofficial Guide to Things to Do in Noord-Brabant in between Roadburn shows Roadburn 2011 is approaching! By now you have undoubtedly spent way too much time studying the running order and agonizing over your must-see list for the festival. Relax, when you are in the thick of it, formal plans usually get thrown out the window and you tap into your own personal Roadburn vibe. But what about the hours before the sensory overload of fantastic live music gets underway each day? The province of Noord-Brabant has some interesting museums and art spaces. If you are interested in visiting an exhibit or two while you are in town for the festival, allow me to share a few suggestions: In Tilburg, you can get an up close look at a selection of Roadburn-flavored portraits by photographer Ester Segarra in Beyond the Road, an exhibition hosted by Gust van Dijk: Home to Contemporary Art. Born in Barcelona and currently based in London, Segarra has shot many musicians who have played Roadburn in the past including 2010 guest curator Tom G Warrior, Cathedral and Electric Wizard. She has also captured this year’s guest curators Sunn O))) and featured artists including Swans’ Michael Gira and Pentagram’s Bobby Liebling. The presentation space is located around the corner and down the street from the 013 at Tivolistraat 22. Venture to another side of Tilburg and have an Alice in Wonderland experience at the De Pont museum of contemporary art walking among the giant table and chairs and other works featured in the current Robert Therrien exhibition. The exhibition also includes the debut of his new installation Transparent Room. Staying in Den Bosch? Chances are if you are coming to Roadburn you have works by the city’s most famous son in your record collection. Visit the Jheronimus Bosch Art Centre and get better acquainted with the man behind the covers of your Into the Pandemonium, Aion and Deep Purple III albums. The centre also offers a stunning view of the beautiful medieval city. Tip: Look for the black signs with gold letters around the city to help you find the Bosch Art Centre. While you are in Den Bosch, you might want to seize the opportunity to visit the Noordbrabant Museum before it closes for major renovations. The current Fantastic Flemings – Modernism and Our Southern Neighbours 1865 – 1960 exhibition offers a tour of Belgian modernism with works by 50 Flemish artists that have never before been shown together in the Netherlands. Tip: visit the café for a coffee and a Bossche bol, the city’s famous ultra-rich chocolate-covered cream-filled pastry for a decadent pastry experience unlike any other. Staying in Eindhoven during Roadburn? The city’s MU artspace is hosting The New Psychedelica, an exhibit featuring various contemporary works of art inspired by the overload of imagery that surrounds us and the technology that permeates our lives. MU is located in downtown Eindhoven at Emmasingel 20 in the iconic Witte Dame building that also houses the city’s library. It is less than a 10-minute walk from the train station, and is within easy walking distance of various hotels and hostels, too. Tip: Next door to MU, the library café De Verlichting serves good coffee, which you can enjoy on site or order to go. Staying in Breda? The Netherlands has always been a wellspring of graphic design talent, including the local artists who have shaped Roadburn’s visual style over the years. Learn more about the country’s achievements in graphic design at Breda’s Graphic Design Museum. In addition to the permanent exhibit 100 Years of Dutch Graphic Design, the museum’s current temporary exhibits include UnCOVERing Women, which examines how women have been depicted in various women’s magazines throughout the years, and Connecting the Past and Future, which explores the history and future of graphic image culture. Breda is also home to lesser-known attractions including The Beer Advertising Museum. According to the highly enthusiastic website, admission is free but apparently the museum is only open on Sunday from 11am – 11pm. Stop by on your way to the Afterburner. What else is there to do in between Roadburn shows? Catching up on sleep is one option. Visiting Tilburg’s Frietboetiek (Heuvelstraat 3) for a big cone of friet is a perennially popular Roadburn pastime. Fries or chips, call them what you will but try something besides ketchup on them. Hanging out on restaurant row around the corner from the 013 is always fun, too. It’s great for people watching and perfect for an impromptu game of ‘Count the…’ In 2010 it was ‘Count the Ulver Hoodies’; in 2009 it was ‘Count the St. Vitus Tats.’ For 2011, I’m thinking Voivod t-shirt poker. To familiarize yourself with some of the possible cards, have a look here. Granted, it’s all still very much in the planning stages, but so far I’ve got three Korgulls plus two shirts for the same Voivod album is a full house. However, three Korgulls plus two European tour shirts for any Voivod album trumps that. Spotting a series of five different Voivod shirts that starts with either War & Pain or Infini and includes the four subsequent or preceding albums is a royal flush.
