Eve was recently voted as ‘album of the year’ by our beloved Roadburn readers, and the album ranked amongst the top 10 in many year-end lists the world over, ranging from The Obelisk to The Quietus. The band’s appearance at our 2011 festival is not only a testament to Eve‘s massive creative success, but it also honors our festival attendees for their dedication towards this much beloved Italian trio. Stylisticaly, Eve is a dedication to the first woman ever to walk the earth, and who caused the downfall of Adam and mankind. The album is a single 45 minute long gargantuan riff-prayer, seperated into five distinctve movements that captivate us, and lead us in a behemothic meditation on how cruel organized religion has been in dealing with the Garden of Eden’s first lady. In addition to playing Eve, Ufomammut‘s set will also be comprised of several classic tracks they haven’t been playing recently. Ufomammut commented: “Since our “Eve” album was voted best of 2010 by Roadburn readers, playing it at the upcoming festival will have a very special meaning for Ufomammut! Vodkasatan: Keiji Haino Keiji Haino will be part of Sunn O)))‘s curated event at Roadburn Festival 2011, set for Friday, April 15th at the 013 venue in Tilburg, Holland. Also appearing on the bill are Winter, Corrosion of Conformity (“Animosity” lineup), Earth, Caspar Brötzmann Massaker, Mamiffer, Scorn, Beaver, Hooded Menace, Menace Ruine, Aluk Todolo, The Secret, Atilla’s Csihar’s Void Ov Voices and Sunn O))). “In a Sept. 1996 Wire interview, Keiji Haino spoke about his music as a form of prayer, one that may lift or degrade the listener, depending on his own performance. He believed his music was a “diagram of white magic,” but that if his efforts were to fall short, his music would reveal itself as harmful black magic. “I can’t change your hate into like unless there is an equal amount of like corresponding to your hate.” While acknowledging that “Prayer exists because nothing is perfect,” he felt that his work was an exploration of that imperfection, attempting to voice what was impossible: “I’m trying to express in music the satori that the Buddha achieved but couldn’t explain.” Whichever genre he has chosen to seek that void where the inexpressibly spiritual may be expressed—Psychedelic Rock, Noise, solo drumming, Acoustic Blues—his quest has never been anything less than a raw, naked search to speak the unspoken. He has, in the process, expanded both the definition of a spiritual artist and the uses for improv and Noise, as did the Free Jazz explorers of the late ’60′s” –Mike Wood. “We are nearly beyond words regarding the honor and pleasure of Mr. Haino accepting our invitation to perform at SUNN O)))s curated Roadburn. One of our heroes, teachers and certainly masters will appear. We have been following Mr. Haino’s music and witnessing his incredible energy for many years now. The impression that this energies have made and can reflect upon us are undeniable. It’s forming an super-real evening! Carlson, Brötzmann, Haino! High philosophers of the six strings” –Stephen O’Malley, Sunn O))). As curator, Sunn O))) (Greg Anderson and Stephen O’Malley) are personally selecting the bands that will play during their special event, as well as performing a headlining show.
